Acupuncture for Fertility

NEW YORK - Trying to conceive? Acupuncture just may be the push in the right direction, according to a new report.

Acupuncture can:

  • help reduce stress
  • increase blood flow to the reproductive organs
  • help normalize ovulation

- all of which can help a woman conceive.

According to study author Dr. Raymond Chang of Cornell University and Meridian Medical in New York City, women having trouble conceiving may want to try acupuncture treatments.

People trying to increase their chances of conceiving should try a number of different techniques, Chang noted, and acupuncture for infertility “is certainly one good alternative that has been proven.”

Western explanations for how acupuncture might work regarding infertility suggest that acupuncture may exert an influence over the centers in the brain that affect ovulation, and can also work on the brain to reduce stress.

Stress and the brain are closely tied to fertility, according to Chang. Stress can prevent a woman from ovulating entirely. This explains why women under high degrees of stress often stop menstruating, and why couples often conceive while on vacation.

Researchers have also discovered that acupuncture can increase the blood flow to a woman’s reproductive organs, providing them with better nourishment. Also, acupuncture can improve the lining of the uterus.
